Vest in Us Your Safety, Not Your Honor
A Philosophical Veteran’s Day Poem Urging the Use of the Military Only for Defense.
Vest in us your safety, not your honor.
End wars we cannot win or need not fight.
There is no way to comprehend war's horror
Except to hear its voices in the night.
Replay that long soliloquy of sorrow,
An endless babbling brook of piercing pain,
Night that must each day the numb soul harrow,
'Ere you cast your vote for war again.
Safety, yes, of course, as threats arise;
Defenses strong and ready, as is wise.
Although we would the world were safe and free,
Yet war is evil and will ever be.
