Policy or Personality
A Poem for Presidents Day About the Relative Importance of Policy, Personality, and Identity in Determining How Voters Vote
Policy or personality?
Relatively, which deserves more weight?
Each can make or break a presidency,
Sharing boos or kudos for its fate.
In voting, one once chose which quality
Demanded greater fear or hope. Of late,
Electorates eschew reality,
Not open to the truth of either trait.
The point, instead, becomes identity,
Sustaining which will voters motivate,
Devouring moral ambiguity
As policy and personality
Yield to passion, prejudice, and hate.
